Openwave announces new mobile toolkits

February 21 — Openwave has launched Mobile Developer Toolkit Version 1.0, a set of resources that enable developers to write games, and messaging- and location-based services for mobile devices. The toolkit includes WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Push Library, Java Edition; a multimedia messaging developer SDK; and a location studio SDK. The company has also announced version 7.0 of Openwave Phone Tools, a tool suite that integrates industry standard content and platforms, such as XHTML and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), to create differentiated mobile phone services.

Sonic Software updates SonicMQ

February 21 — SonicMQ 5.0, Sonic Software’s enterprise messaging server, includes new clustering, management, and security features. Version 5.0 enables seamless routing of data across large networks; allows configuration, deployment, monitoring, and diagnosis of distributed servers from a central management console; and includes a flexible and pluggable security framework.

Recursion Software announces JMS solution

February 21 — Recursion Software has introduced Voyager Messaging, a Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE)-compliant implementation of Java Messaging Service (JMS). The tool features client persistence, configurable thread pools, and server-hosted message listeners.

Murach publishes servlet/JSP guide

February 21 — In Murach’s Java Servlets and JSP, authors Andrea Steelman and Joel Murach teach developers with basic Java skills how to create professional Web applications. The book covers Java Web programming basics, servlet and JSP (JavaServer Pages) skills, database handling, and commonly used advanced features and skills. OpenOffice.org 1.0.2 SDK automates office suites with Java

February 21 — The OpenOffice.org 1.0.2 SDK for Linux, Solaris, Windows, and PowerPC provides the tools and documentation for programming OpenOffice.org APIs and creating extensions to OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org is a community-developed office suite that runs on major platforms. It provides an API for Java that allows developers to write new office suite components or access Web services.

Tira Wireless and Photogra launch photo-sharing app

February 14 — Tira Wireless and Photogra have introduced MyMobilePix, a Java-based photo-sharing application for mobile phones. MyMobilePix allows users to download and store photos on their mobile phones, and view them without connecting to the network. The application allows mobile subscribers to also edit, share, and print photos from their phones, and also features online photo editing tools so users can alter photos.

Thought Inc. adds new features to CocoBase

February 14 — Thought Inc. has released CocoBase Enterprise O/R Version 4.5 Service Release 1. The object to relational (O/R) mapping tool’s newest version includes updated Eclipse IDE integration, new wizard to import entire database schema in one process, and an updated class importer.

February 14 — Wrox Press has released IBM WebSphere 4.0 Application Server Deployment and Administration Handbook, which is a guide to the configurative, administrative, and deployment tasks associated with setting up and running J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) components on IBM’s WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition 4.0. Sun announces enterprise platform enhancements

February 7 — Sun Microsystems plans to include support for Basic Profile in J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.4. Basic Profile is a specification proposed by the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I) to ensure that Web services component technologies work together. J2EE 1.4 is expected to be available in the summer.

BEA expands server offering

February 7 — BEA Systems has added two new editions to its Java application server line: BEA WebLogic Express and BEA WebLogic Server, Workgroup Edition. The two product offerings were specifically designed for the departmental-level budget and application needs. BEA WebLogic Express is used for building and running JavaServer Pages (JSP) and Java servlets, and is targeted at Web applications. BEA WebLogic Server, Workgroup Edition gives departments of up to twenty end-users the complete set of features found in BEA WebLogic Server.

January 31 — AdventNet has added support for enterprise tools and platforms to ManageEngine JMX Studio, an independent JMX (Java Management Extensions) implementation certified by Sun Microsystems. ManageEngine JMX Studio’s new features include an out-of-the-box adaptor for Tibco AMI, an Apache Axis SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) adaptor, manageability for Apache Tomcat servlet containers, and enhanced security with a context-based authentication service for its adaptors and the built-in Rules Engine.

JAMES promoted to top-level project

January 31 — Apache has increased the visibility of the Java Apache Mail Enterprise Server (JAMES) by upgrading it to a top-level Apache project. JAMES is a 100 percent pure Java SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and POP3 mail server, and NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) news server. The project is designed to be a complete and portable enterprise mail engine solution.
