Instantiations adds to CodePro product suite

February 28 — Instantiations has introduced three new products into its CodePro suite, a group of products that enhance IBM WebSphere Studio and Eclipse development environments. CodePro Advisor includes best practices tools for Java development; CodePro Agility includes productivity tools for Java development; and CodePro Build includes build management tools for Java development. All three products are integrated into CodePro Studio.

Openwave announces new mobile toolkits

February 21 — Openwave has launched Mobile Developer Toolkit Version 1.0, a set of resources that enable developers to write games, and messaging- and location-based services for mobile devices. The toolkit includes WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Push Library, Java Edition; a multimedia messaging developer SDK; and a location studio SDK. The company has also announced version 7.0 of Openwave Phone Tools, a tool suite that integrates industry standard content and platforms, such as XHTML and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), to create differentiated mobile phone services.

February 21 — The OpenOffice.org 1.0.2 SDK for Linux, Solaris, Windows, and PowerPC provides the tools and documentation for programming OpenOffice.org APIs and creating extensions to OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org is a community-developed office suite that runs on major platforms. It provides an API for Java that allows developers to write new office suite components or access Web services.

February 14 — Tira Wireless and Photogra have introduced MyMobilePix, a Java-based photo-sharing application for mobile phones. MyMobilePix allows users to download and store photos on their mobile phones, and view them without connecting to the network. The application allows mobile subscribers to also edit, share, and print photos from their phones, and also features online photo editing tools so users can alter photos.

February 14 — Thought Inc. has released CocoBase Enterprise O/R Version 4.5 Service Release 1. The object to relational (O/R) mapping tool’s newest version includes updated Eclipse IDE integration, new wizard to import entire database schema in one process, and an updated class importer.

Sun announces enterprise platform enhancements

February 7 — Sun Microsystems plans to include support for Basic Profile in J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.4. Basic Profile is a specification proposed by the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I) to ensure that Web services component technologies work together. J2EE 1.4 is expected to be available in the summer.

BEA expands server offering

February 7 — BEA Systems has added two new editions to its Java application server line: BEA WebLogic Express and BEA WebLogic Server, Workgroup Edition. The two product offerings were specifically designed for the departmental-level budget and application needs. BEA WebLogic Express is used for building and running JavaServer Pages (JSP) and Java servlets, and is targeted at Web applications. BEA WebLogic Server, Workgroup Edition gives departments of up to twenty end-users the complete set of features found in BEA WebLogic Server.
