Facebook drops support for Java

Not sure how many people working on Facebook apps were building to the social networking site’s Java APIs, but they’re probably going to have to stop doing so now. Facebook is dropping official support for the language; existing libraries will probably still work, but the company firmly suggests that programmers move to other platforms. To my mind, the funniest perspective on this move comes from James Sugrue at DZone: Facebook Drops Java Support – Loses Another $1B of Fantasy Valuation. The move and the reaction do reinforce the idea that, after 10 years, Java is a platform for grown-ups, and Facebook isn’t. Of course, the kids today will be the platform-decision-making grownups of tomorrow.
