Groovy has become one of the more popular languages built on top of Java. It looks like it’s hitting a typical language rough patch as its popularity soars but its IDE support isn’t quite there yet for non-pioneers — particularly in Eclipse. (Check out this blog post to see a programmer struggling — ultimately successfully — to get the Groovy-based Grails to play nicely with Eclipse.) Andre Almiray implores the community to do something about it — one of the strengths of open source software, after all! His telling of the tale is of interest because it points out that one IDE that does have great Groovy support is IntelliJ IDEA, and that came because JetBrains paid people to do it. My guess is that support in Eclipse will lag until some company decides it’s worth its while to pay one of its employees to do the same, at least part time. Open Source
