IBM revamps Toolbox developer service

March 28 — IBM has broadened its Toolbox subscription service to give developers in small and medium-sized businesses access to its software products. The subscription requires a yearly fee for access to most of IBM’s software. In addition, Toolbox now lets developers build and test applications on various middleware products and technologies for a reduced price.

JabberD Quickstart available for free download

March 28 — The Jabber Software Foundation has unveiled JabberD Quickstart, a prepackaged executable for the installation and use of the JabberD open source instant messaging server. JabberD can be used for secure intra-organizational IM behind the firewall, secure inter-organizational IM through server-to-server communications, or as a publicly available open IM server.

Gallaware enhances servlet framework

March 28 — Gallaware has released version 4 of its Java servlet framework, ServletActionBroker (SAB). SAB extends the standard Java servlet API within an open framework that allows developers direct access to the lower-level servlet API and maintains compatibility with current servlet and JSP (JavaServer Pages) standards. Version 4 includes browser-based configuration, automatic event logging, and a data conversion factory architecture.

ClientSoft announces Web services/legacy integration system

March 28 — ClientSoft has introduced ClientSoft ServiceBuilder, a tool that allows enterprise developers to wrap existing legacy programs and transactions into .Net, Java, or COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) components, or Web services. ServiceBuilder provides bidirectional communication between legacy platforms and Web services, Java, or Windows applications; allows mainframes to consume Web services; integrates legacy systems into new service-oriented architectures; and more.

Parasoft unveils error prevention suite

March 28 — The Parasoft Enterprise Solutions suite offers tools and best practices for preventing software errors. The suite identifies an error, locates its cause and the point in production that created the error, implements preventative practices to ensure that errors do not reoccur, and monitors the process.

IronEye SQL available for free trial download

March 28 — IronGrid has released IronEye SQL, a JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) performance analysis tool. IronEye SQL allows developers to view a graph of all SQL statements that flow over one or more JDBC drivers to identify those statements that take the longest to prepare or execute.

Broadbeam launches developer site

March 28 — The Broadbeam Developer Zone is a new online resource center that gives mobile application developers, system integrators, and independent software vendors access to tools and information for developing and deploying enterprise mobile applications. Systinet announces new products

March 28 — Systinet has released WASP Developer 4.5 and WASP 4.5 OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Edition. Version 4.5 of the WASP Developer IDE supports Web services creation, debugging, and deployment. Nextel, Sun, and Motorola announce wireless contest winners

Polygenix previews mock testing tool

March 21 — Polygenix has released an early access preview of its AgileTest mock object testing solution. The tool is a mock object implementation for unit testing Java interfaces and classes, and an object substitution technology.

Proxy Sniffer 2.9 now available

March 21 — Proxy Sniffer is a Java-based Web application analysis tool. Version 2.9 contains a proxy server with integrated SSL (Secure Socket Layer) tunnels to record unencrypted as well as encrypted Web browser surf sessions. Based on the recorded surf sessions, it automatically generates Java load-test programs, which can be executed from any system that supports Java.

ObjectVenture launches pattern-based development Website

Apple releases J2SE 1.4 for the Mac

March 14 — Apple’s Mac OS X now features a full implementation of Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4. Mac developers now have access to new native I/O (input/output) APIs; XML technologies; more security-oriented APIs for Kerberos, certificate handling, authentication, and authorization, secure sockets, and cryptography; internationalization and localization enhancements to support Unicode 3.0; and more.

FirstSQL launches FirstSQL/J ProLite

March 14 — FirstSQL has announced FirstSQL/J ProLite, a version of its FirstSQL/J tool. Designed for any type of embedded system, device, or server computing application, FirstSQL/J provides a multithreaded database engine with transaction processing for any platform supporting a JDK 1.1 or greater JVM. March 14 — IIT Software has updated its JMS (Java Message Service) enterprise messaging system. SwiftMQ 4.5 features a job scheduler for executing jobs at a particular time of day or at intervals, based on freely definable calendars.

Sybase will deliver PowerBuilder 9.0 at the end of March

March 7 — Sybase has announced the latest version of its rapid application development (RAD) tool, PowerBuilder. Version 9.0 includes RAD JSP (JavaServer Pages) Targets that allow the development and deployment of JSP Web applications. In addition, PowerBuilder 9.0 lays the foundation for 4GLplus, Sybase’s forthcoming open RAD tool for heterogeneous deployment environments that incorporates life-cycle application development and management concepts.

aJile introduces Java development kit for Nintendo Game Boy

March 7 — aJile Systems has launched JAMiD, a Java-based game development kit for Nintendo Game Boy. The kit uses MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile) 2.0, which offers advanced audio and graphics features to Java mobile game developers. JAMiD’s key component is the Java game cartridge, which plugs into the external card slot on any Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP. In addition, aJile is building an online game portal, where mobile game developers can distribute their MIDP games directly to users.

JNBridge adds new features to interoperability tool

March 7 — JNBridge has released JNBridgePro 1.3 beta, the latest version of its Java/.Net interoperability tool. JNBridgePro allows classes written in .Net languages to access Java classes and enables Java to call .Net code through callbacks. Version 1.3’s new features include the ability to pass EJBs (Enterprise JavaBeans), direct mapping between Java and .Net collection classes, and strong naming.
