Is Java rudderless?

Over at the codesta Weblog, there’s a bit of a lament on the “rudderless” state of Java. What it boils down to, really, is a description of a lack of “leadership” on the part of Sun — but then it goes in to many of the interesting things that are going on, driven by open source projects, with languages built on the JVM. Personally, I think that if the JVM becomes the the basis for a whole ecosystem, it will make sure the Java platform will be alive and kicking for years to come — though it may become increasingly harder for Sun to figure out how to make money off of it (but then, hasn’t it always?). In possibly related news on Sun no longer being where the action is when it comes to the Java platform, over at JavaLobby there’s a post on Google’s big code show with the title “Google I/O: As Cool as JavaOne Used To Be?” Nothing in the post itself about JavaOne, just the implication that when it comes to Java, Sun and its and dog and pony show may no longer be where it’s at.
