Seems some technical writers at Sun are suing over unpaid overtime. California law exempts “administrative, professional or computer professional workers” from overtime rules, and I suppose the lawsuit will hinge on the question of whether tech writers fall into one of these categories. I was alerted to this by a blog post on a Sun employee’s blog; he seemed rather indignant about the lawsuit, basically saying that folks who sign on to tech companies know what they’re getting into: long hours before important product launches, in return for high salaries. Now the post has been replaced by a terse note that Sun can’t comment on pending litigation. Ah, the joys of corporate blogging! One wonders whose job it is to scan over all of Sun’s blogs (lord knows there are plenty of them) looking for legally questionable content. As to the merit of overtime pay for tech writers, your humble Java To Go blogger, tapping this out at 12:24 am, has no comment. Software Development
