Java desktop apps have always had a little trouble looking like native applications, and Java on the Mac has traditionally looked particularly wonky. Now a group at Adobe (of all places) is launching a project to port SWT to Cocoa, OS X’s native programming environment. (Right now SWT works with Carbon, a legacy of the ancient pre-OS X days). The aim is to get the port ready by the time Eclipse 3.5 is ready for release — which probably won’t happen until June 2009. In other news, Angsuman Chakraborty offers two methods for installing Java on an iPhone. The first is a clever workaround but a bit of a hack — using alcheMo, a third-party tool that works with Xcode to convert Java code to iPhone-ready C++. The second is a totally breaching-the-terms-of-service method that involves jailbreaking the phone and other similar skullduggery. Technology IndustrySoftware Development
