Sun stock skyrockets!

Hey, all you doomsayers! Sun’s stock has leapt 13 percent in the past day or so! Why should that be? Frustratingly for techies who like things cut and dried, it’s pretty much about expectations management. Quoth Reuters: “[Sun] posted lower preliminary fourth quarter results that were largely in line with Wall Street forecasts, but sparked a rally in its stock by investors who had feared worse results.” Sun predicts that it’ll earn 5 to 15 cents a share in its fourth quarter, in line with a year ago. (The killjoys at 24/7 Wall Street call it “better than expected, but still awful.”) Jon Schwartz is convinced that the economic downturn will mean more people using open source products — whether he’s referring to Solaris or Java or both here is unclear.
