A group of leaders at the New York Software Industry Association had all sorts of cheery things to say about mobile development in general and Java mobile development in particular. RIM in particular has hitched its wagon pretty firmly to Java’s star, and despite all the NEW FLASHY SHINY SEXY iPhone hype, Blackberrys aren’t going away any time soon. The other big hope for Java development is, of course, Google’s Android platform, but there are no shipping Android-based phones yet, and indications are that the surge of developer interest in the platform just isn’t there. Meanwhile, Latin American Java ME users already have access to the ultimate mobile Java application: one that allows you to order McDonald’s food from your mobile device and have it delivered to you. The Inquirer has a typically snarky take, but one interesting angle of the story is that the mobile Java app actually complements a Flash-based Web app. Seems it’s easier to get Java on mobile devices than Flash… Software Development
