Apache boosts Turbine and Torque

September 5 — The Turbine 2.3 Web application framework includes a completely overhauled templating engine and no longer supports WebMacro, Freemarker, or Castor. It uses Maven as its build tool and commons-logging and commons-configuration.

Torque is a persistence layer originally developed as part of Turbine; it has since been decoupled, and the final release of Torque 1.3 is now available. It uses stratum lifecycle interfaces and commons-logging, and runtime and generation environments have been separated.

Sims Computing advances Flux 5.0 Job Scheduler

September 5 — Sims Computing’s Flux 5.0 Job Scheduler now functions as a standalone job scheduler. It has a new desktop graphical user interface (GUI) you can use to create, edit, and monitor jobs. Other enhancements include improved dependencies between jobs, job queuing, and default error handler.

IconAge delivers JWin Express Enterprise

September 5 — IconAge’s JWin Express Enterprise allows the delivery of Java applications to Microsoft Windows platforms in familiar formats. JWin Express Enterprise lets developers and publishers create a Win32 native executable, a Win32 Native Service, Control Panel Applet, or a MMC Snap-in out of their Java application. The product also offers integrated licensing, error handling, usage management, and update management.

Windward Studios breezes into report generation

August 29 — Windward Studios has unleashed Windward Reports 1.2, a Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) report engine. Windward Reports 1.2 generates reports from XML data to PDF, RTF, HTML, and text export formats and now includes a Remote Method Invocation (RMI) server and client.

JuggerNET meshes Java and .Net

August 29 — Codemesh has released the commercial version of JuggerNET, a Java-.Net integration solution. JuggerNET generates .Net proxy classes for accessing Java classes, and the JuggerNET runtime library completes all Java-.Net interoperations.

JInspired pumps up JDBInsight 2.0

August 29 — JInspired’s JDBInsight 2.0 Early Access (EA) 2 is now available. The product has undergone user interface improvements along with increased server platform support. JDBInsight offers SQL analysis and tracks memory allocation, blocking, and waiting, and garbage collection at the transaction execution path level.

Metanology produces two new MDE tools

August 22 — Joining the existing MDE (model-driven development environment) for Struts, Metanology has introduced MDE for EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) and MDE for J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition). Metanology’s MDE includes a UML (Unified Modeling Language) modeler and a MetaProgram editor that integrate with a Java IDE to build J2EE applications. MDE for EJB creates session beans, entity beans, message-driven beans, business objects, and value objects from simple UML models. MDE for J2EE enhances MDE for Struts and MDE for EJB by connecting the Struts user interface to EJB services.

Salmon’s SOFIA swims forward

August 22 — Salmon has released Salmon Open Framework for Internet Applications (SOFIA) 2.0. SOFIA is an open source toolset for building database-driven Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) or Swing Set applications. SOFIA 2.0 includes extended Swing Set components, declarative data validation rules in SOFIA models, support for Ingres, Postgres, and Firebird SQL engines, and integration with log4j and JDK 1.4 logging.

Versant upgrades Versant Real-Time Framework

August 22 — Versant’s Versant Real-Time Framework (VRTF) consists of an integrated transaction manager and a suite of agents that connect the VRTF to systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Version 3.0 adds support for open XML agents and Web services.

August 22 — Rogue Wave Software’s Lightweight Enterprise Integration Framework (LEIF) 1.2 enables Web services functionality for C/C++ applications, allowing interoperability with .Net and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications. Features in LEIF 1.2 include: Graphical user interface (GUI) Project Wizard, pluggable protocols, XML document validation, and improved error handling and support of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) faults.

August 22 — FWA Software has released Visual Tags for Struts, an extension suite for Dreamweaver MX. Visual Tags for Struts integrates Struts 1.1 tag libraries with Dreamweaver MX, providing text-based creation and editing of JavaServer Pages (JSP) pages that contain Struts tags.

Segue Software increases J2EE and Web services support

August 15 — Segue Software’s latest version of its load and stress testing tool, SilkPerformer 6.0, now includes optimized support for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Web services, which allows users to test the functionality, interoperability, and performance of Web services and Enterprise JavaBeans components and Java RMI objects. SilkPerformer 6.0 also includes load-testing support for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2.0’s Multimedia Message Service (MMS), record and replay support for the latest version of Oracle Call Interface (OCI), and TrueLog technology for SQL operations.

Excelsior JET 3.15 launches

August 15 — Excelsior JET is a Java VM consisting of three major components: optimizing ahead-of-time (AOT) compiler, caching just-in-time (JIT) compiler, and high-performance runtime. Currently available for Windows only (Linux version is under development), Excelsior JET 3.15 is a maintenance update that adds support for Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.2 and addresses customer issues.

Tortuga betters bug reports

August 15 — Tortuga Technologies has released Ozibug 2.0, a Web-based bug tracking system. Ozibug 2.0 can now use a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)-compliant database for data storage. Reporting functionality has also been enhanced with RSS reports, cross module reporting, and report sharing between the bug summary and report pages.

ReportingEngines fires up Formula One e.Report Engine

August 15 — ReportingEngine’s Formula One e.Report Engine now includes the ability to access and generate reports from in-memory Java objects, a functionality known as Application Data Reporting. This model improves data access efficiency and performance by allowing application data to be queried once and accessed repeatedly.

IBM adds WebSphere plug-ins; licenses middleware and testing tools

August 15 — IBM has introduced two new WebSphere plug-ins, Application Tools for Extension Services and Visual Application Builder. Application Tools for Extension Services are WebSphere Studio-based tools that support the development of Web applications for the Extension Services for WebSphere Everyplace (ESWE) platform for mobile devices. Visual Application Builder is a set of WebSphere Studio plug-ins that allows quick development of form-based Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications.

IBM has also made licenses for these four technologies available: J323 Engine, a Java middleware for videoconferencing and IP telephony applications; XML Schema Quality Checker, a program that diagnoses improper use of the W3C XML schema language; and the IBM Page Detailer and High Resolution Time Stamp application performance testing tools.
