Data Representations introduces micro Java development tool

January 11 — Data Representations has launched Simplicity for Mobile Devices, a cross-platform rapid application development tool for Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition/Mobile Information Device Profile (J2ME/MIDP). The platform allows the development of programs that run on Java-enabled cell phones and other mobile devices. Simplicity for Mobile Devices features a MID Emulator that helps developers build and test MIDlets while customizing to a particular device.

Quickstream and Drala Software combine products

January 11 — Quickstream Software will integrate its e-Content Management Platform with the Drala Workflow Engine. Quickstream’s e-Content Management Platform is a Web-based application that centralizes, searches, controls, classifies, and tracks electronic business files. The Drala Workflow Engine is an embeddable Java component for automating business processes. Together, the two companies will create a J2EE workflow and e-content management tool.

JWorks develops embedded apps

January 11 — Wind River Systems has introduced JWorks, a Java platform for embedded applications. It implements Java for 32-bit PersonalJava and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition Connected Device Configuration classes. In addition, JWorks integrates two other embedded technologies: Insignia Solutions’ Jeode JVM environment and Wind River’s VxWorks real-time operating system.

JavaOne registration opens

January 4 — This year’s JavaOne will be held March 25-29 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Alcea Technologies releases bug tracking system

January 4 — The Alcea Fast BugTrack 1.2 is a Web-based bug tracking system written in Java. Platform independent, Fast BugTrack deploys on Windows, Solaris, HP, and Linux systems.

Jini Starter Kit 1.2 now available

December 28 — Sun has updated the Jini Technology Starter Kit to version 1.2. In addition, the updated Jini Technology Core Platform Compatibility Kit 2A aligns with the starter kit’s new features. Jini network technology is an open architecture that enables developers to build network-centric services, whether implemented in hardware or software.

Zeosoft partners with SavaJe

December 28 — Zeosoft, now a SavaJe Silver Partner, has integrated its ZeoSphere embedded application server with the SavaJe XE operating system. ZeoSphere is currently in beta version, with plans for a market launch in the first quarter of 2002. The app server is an open architecture foundation technology that fits with various enterprise technology strategies.

FreeTTS turns text into speech

December 28 — Researchers from Sun Microsystems Laboratories have created FreeTTS, an open source speech synthesis engine written entirely in the Java. The software converts text to speech: computer users type it, and their workstations speak it.

Borland introduces Web services toolkit

December 21 — The Borland Web Services Kit for Java allows enterprises to create and deploy Web services with the Borland JBuilder IDE. The kit is a collection of APIs, architectures, and additional standards developed by the Java community. Available as a plug-in with JBuilder, the kit handles the SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), UDDI (Universal Description Discovery and Integration), and WSDL (Web Services Description Language) implementations, allowing developers to focus on their Java development

Innoopract launches W4 Toolkit

December 21 — The Framework W4 Toolkit is an object-oriented Java component model with graphical objects such as panels, input fields, and tables. It also includes an event controller as well as layout managers similar to those of AWT/Swing.

Java XML Pack now available

December 21 — Sun Microsystems has released the Java XML Pack, a collection of XML and Web services technologies for the Java platform. The package includes the Java API for XML Messaging (JAXM) 1.0.1, Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) 1.2, Java API for XML Registries (JAXR) 1.0, and Java API for XML-based RPC (JAX-RPC) 1.0.

Thought Inc. adds Ant to CocoBase

December 21 — Thought Inc.’s CocoBase Enterprise O/R, Dynamic Mapping for the Enterprise now supports Apache Ant. Ant scripts allow developers to standardize build files across servers or platforms; its integration with CocoBase was designed to reduce the cost of building and deploying applications, and increase flexibility.

Saffeine protects code with JCE

December 21

— Saffeine Research has launched Saffeine 1.0, a framework that uses Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) to provide feature-driven license management and code protection. The framework enables the creation of protected application storage, with different groups of classes or resources encrypted with different keys. The Saffeine runtime environment only loads those application parts if the customer has a license with the appropriate decryption keys.
