IBM releases tools for the Eclipse platform

April 26 — IBM has introduced new WebSphere Studio application development products for Linux and Website development, and new tools for building wireless, portal, and voice applications. Based on the open source Eclipse platform, the new offerings include: WebSphere Studio Application Developer for Linux and Windows; WebSphere Studio Site Developer; WebSphere Everyplace Toolkit, WebSphere Portal Toolkit; and an updated WebSphere Voice Toolkit.

Sun enhances Java Card

April 26 — Java Card 2.2, Sun’s standard for developing smart card applications, features new technologies that ease Java Card application programming. The release also improves smart card application interoperability and support for wireless standards.

Vulcan Machines launches Moon2

April 26 — Vulcan Machines has enhanced its processor for Java-based technologies. A replacement for the JVM, Moon2 executes Java byte codes in parallel with the host processor.

Ozibug exposes bugs

April 26 — Ozibug 1.1 is a Web-based bug tracking system from Tortuga Technologies. Written in Java, the tool utilizes servlet technology and offers features such as role-based access, audit trails, email notifications, full internationalization, and a customizable appearance.

SOAPtest checks Web services

April 26 — Parasoft has introduced an automated Web services testing tool. SOAPtest lets developers create a virtual workbench to test the link between an enterprise system’s modules. It performs functionality testing, load testing, and regression testing.

O’Reilly releases Web Performance Tuning, Second Edition

April 26 — Author Patrick Killelea has updated Web Performance Tuning to include new chapters on Website architecture, security, and reliability, and their impact on performance. Published by O’Reilly, this second edition also discusses Java scalability on microprocessor servers.

PointBase pinpoints mobile market

April 26 — PointBase has launched PointSolutions for Mobility, an initiative for extending applications to mobile devices and wireless networks. PointSolutions for Mobility are packaged combinations of PointBase relational database and synchronization technologies, complementary technologies, and consultative services. With PointSolutions, PointBase will help companies address hardware, enterprise application interfaces, application aggregation and integration requirements, and Java-based application development.

Quickstream and Savvion integrate products

April 26 — Quickstream and Savvion partner by integrating the Quickstream e-content management platform with Savvion’s BusinessManager. BusinessManager is a Java-based software platform that lets companies transform business processes into distributed Web applications. The Quickstream platform sorts, displays, exchanges, and controls electronic business files over the Web. This new partnership will allow companies to deploy an enterprise application that integrates all aspects of document management into business processes.

New Technology/enterprise updates JeeWiz!

April 26 — JeeWiz! 1.1, New Technology/enterprise’s tool for developing, deploying and testing Web services and J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) applications, now supports WebSphere Application Server 4, Struts, J2EE 1.2, and EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) 1.1. Speech recognition software vendors establish partnership

April 19 — Voxpilot has partnered with Voice Components to advance speech recognition software application development. Voxpilot customers can now build speech applications with Voice Essentials 1, Voice Components’ VoiceXML 1.0 speech application development toolkit. Voice Essentials 1 includes 18 JavaBean components for adding speech recognition capabilities to applications.

O’Reilly launches enterprise series

April 19 — O’Reilly will publish a three-volume series entitled Building Java Enterprise Applications. In Volume 1: Architecture, author Brett McLaughlin covers the backend of application programming, explaining subjects such as databases, entity beans, session beans, the Java Message Service, and the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI). The book takes the reader into design and planning, through the database and directory server, and into code writing.

April 19 — The latest release of the Big Faceless Report Generator, version 1.0.10, includes text-transform, GIF-style transparency, URL values, letter spacing, and a text-indent feature. April 12 — Insignia Solutions has launched a set of products for next-generation Java-enabled mobile devices. The Insignia Secure System Provisioning allows carriers to continuously introduce unique services and applications into handsets. And the Insignia Mobile Foundation software features the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), two Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technologies.

New file format to decrease embedded Java development costs
