Zeosoft launches beta testing program; HIP extends AWT and Swing; and more

Zeosoft launches beta testing program

May 10 — Developers can test Zeosoft’s ZeoSphere mobile platform during the ZeoSphere 1.0 Beta Program. ZeoSphere delivers applications, processes, and data to mobile and enterprise workers through a Java-based application server that resides on mobile devices. The testing will last eight weeks and will help Zeosoft gauge how quickly developers can build applications outside the company’s testing lab.

AdventNet adds WebSphere support to ManageEngine

May 10 — AdventNet has integrated support for IBM’s WebSphere into AdventNet ManageEngine, a graphical tool for automated Java Management Extensions (JMX) development. The tool offers real-time, standards-based, and business-oriented manageability for business processes, and application and middleware infrastructure management.

HIP extends AWT and Swing

May 10 — Our World Live introduces its Human Interface Package (HIP) products for Personal Java, Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE), and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Version 1 of the HIP suite extends Sun’s AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit) and Swing so developers can create user interfaces that work consistently across multiple devices.

Microsoft releases SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC

May 3 — The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides JDBC access to SQL Server 2000 through any Java-enabled applet, application, or application server.

Wily Technology adds BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 to Introscope 3.0

May 3 — Wily Technology has integrated BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 into its enterprise Web application management solution. Introscope 3.0 isolates application performance issues by offering component-level visibility into production Web applications. With the WebLogic integration, customers can automatically monitor WebLogic Server. Introscope also uses Java Management Extension (JMX) for advanced WebLogic monitoring and management control over any JMX-enabled application.

MetaMatrix partners with Versata

May 3 — MetaMatrix and Versata have formed an alliance to improve developer productivity. Versata provides a business logic solution for transaction and process logic, letting users develop and maintain Java applications based on business specifications. The MetaMatrix System works as an infrastructure to manage metadata and provide all applications access to disparate data sources through one standard interface. With Versata and MetaMatrix, developers can create applications with graphical tools, thereby eliminating the need to write code in the data or the business logic layer.

Small Worlds navigates Java systems

May 3 — Information Laboratory has released Small Worlds 1.5, a tool that traverses Java and C++ systems, performing structural analysis, evaluating stability, and identifying problems. New features include stability reports, instant UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams, inheritance trees and collaborations, and language-specific filters for Java and C++.

IBM releases tools for the Eclipse platform

April 26 — IBM has introduced new WebSphere Studio application development products for Linux and Website development, and new tools for building wireless, portal, and voice applications. Based on the open source Eclipse platform, the new offerings include: WebSphere Studio Application Developer for Linux and Windows; WebSphere Studio Site Developer; WebSphere Everyplace Toolkit, WebSphere Portal Toolkit; and an updated WebSphere Voice Toolkit.

Sun enhances Java Card

April 26 — Java Card 2.2, Sun’s standard for developing smart card applications, features new technologies that ease Java Card application programming. The release also improves smart card application interoperability and support for wireless standards.

PointBase pinpoints mobile market

April 26 — PointBase has launched PointSolutions for Mobility, an initiative for extending applications to mobile devices and wireless networks. PointSolutions for Mobility are packaged combinations of PointBase relational database and synchronization technologies, complementary technologies, and consultative services. With PointSolutions, PointBase will help companies address hardware, enterprise application interfaces, application aggregation and integration requirements, and Java-based application development.

Quickstream and Savvion integrate products

April 26 — Quickstream and Savvion partner by integrating the Quickstream e-content management platform with Savvion’s BusinessManager. BusinessManager is a Java-based software platform that lets companies transform business processes into distributed Web applications. Speech recognition software vendors establish partnership

April 19 — Voxpilot has partnered with Voice Components to advance speech recognition software application development. Voxpilot customers can now build speech applications with Voice Essentials 1, Voice Components’ VoiceXML 1.0 speech application development toolkit. Voice Essentials 1 includes 18 JavaBean components for adding speech recognition capabilities to applications.

O’Reilly launches enterprise series

April 19 — O’Reilly will publish a three-volume series entitled Building Java Enterprise Applications. In Volume 1: Architecture, author Brett McLaughlin covers the backend of application programming, explaining subjects such as databases, entity beans, session beans, the Java Message Service, and the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI). The book takes the reader into design and planning, through the database and directory server, and into code writing.

April 19 — The latest release of the Big Faceless Report Generator, version 1.0.10, includes text-transform, GIF-style transparency, URL values, letter spacing, and a text-indent feature.
