PointBase adds JDBC 3.0 compatibility to RDBMS suite

June 7 — PointBase has updated its relational database management systems (RDBMS). PointBase Server 4.3 and PointBase Embedded 4.3 now feature JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) 3.0 compatibility and improved transactional performance, functionality, database console, and documentation. Rational Software introduces ScriptAssure

June 7 — Rational Software has released Rational Suite TestStudio 2002 Release 2 with ScriptAssure, a technology that produces resilient test scripts for Java and Web business applications. ScriptAssure uses a pattern-matching technology to automatically find the correct object for testing and validate dynamic application technology.

Phaos Technology launches three XML toolkits

June 7 — The Phaos XML Security Suite 1.3, one of three new XML-based technologies recently introduced by Phaos Technology, offers Java developers a tool for creating secure XML applications. The suite supports Phaos XKMS 1.0 and Phaos SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) 1.0. Phoas XKMS implements the XML Key Information Service Specification (X-KISS) and the XML Key Registration Service Specification (X-KRSS), allowing software to work with signature and encryption keys. Phaos SAML enables application development with SAML.

LogicLibrary integrates Logidex with Sun ONE

Clover reveals unexecuted code

May 31 — Cortex has released Clover, a code coverage tool for Java that discovers sections of code that are not being executed. A tool for Ant-based projects, Clover helps developers create better unit tests. Clover measures statement, method, and branch coverage and has rich XML, HTML, and GUI (graphical user interface) reporting.

May 24 — With the release of Solaris 9, Sun Microsystems adds the Sun ONE (Open Network Environment) Application Server 7, Platform Edition (formerly iPlanet) to the operating system. The company has also bundled its Sun ONE Directory Server with Solaris.

Borland enhances Java development suite

May 24 — Borland Software has updated three of its Java development tools: JBuilder, Optimizeit Suite, and Enterprise Studio for Java. JBuilder 7 now features Web services capabilities and compliance with mobile application standards. Borland has also integrated its performance management solution, Optimizeit Suite 4.2, into the IDE. Enterprise Studio 4 for Java combines JBuilder 7, the Borland Enterprise Server, and Optimizeit Suite 4.2 with the Rational Rose Professional J 2002 Edition and the Rational Unified Process 2002. Enterprise Studio also includes Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.

Coldbeans Software enlarges custom tag library

May 24 — Coldbeans Software’s custom JSP (JavaServer Pages) suite now includes more than 85 tags. The revised Coldtags taglib features tags for database manipulations, XML/XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) support, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration) requests, and more.

Alcea Technologies updates error tracking system

VistaJDBC automatically extracts Excel data

May 24 — Developed by VistaPortal Software, the updated VistaJDBC (Java Database Connectivity) driver now provides access and update capabilities to Excel spreadsheet files in multiplatform environments. It automatically obtains data from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets through SQL and allows developers to combine it with data from enterprise sources. With the driver’s additional write capabilities, Java apps can automatically create, access, and update multiple spreadsheets.

Zero G Software improves InstallAnywhere’s XML support

May 24 — InstallAnywhere 5, Zero G’s software deployment tool, includes enhanced XML support, suite installation capabilities, team-development features, Web services-based application deployment tools, drag-and-drop functionality, and Apache Ant integration. Zero G has also released InstallAnywhere for the Mac OS.

May 17 — Authors Jim Farley, William Crawford, and David Flanagan have updated Java Enterprise in a Nutshell to reflect the changes in J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.3. The book provides tutorials on JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), RMI (Remote Method Invocation), servlets, JSP (JavaServer Pages), JNDI (Java Naming and Directory Interface), and EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans). Zeosoft launches beta testing program

May 10 — Developers can test Zeosoft’s ZeoSphere mobile platform during the ZeoSphere 1.0 Beta Program. ZeoSphere delivers applications, processes, and data to mobile and enterprise workers through a Java-based application server that resides on mobile devices. The testing will last eight weeks and will help Zeosoft gauge how quickly developers can build applications outside the company’s testing lab.

HIP extends AWT and Swing

May 10 — Our World Live introduces its Human Interface Package (HIP) products for Personal Java, Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE), and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
