Former IBM VP to take over Sun's Java, Jini groups

September 28, 1999 — Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced that Patricia C. Sueltz, formerly general manager of IBM Corp.’s Java Software division, has been appointed president of Sun’s Software Products and Platforms Division.

The position has been open since August, when Alan Baratz left Sun to become a managing director of the private-equity investment firm, Warburg, Pincus & Co.

Sueltz leaves IBM after 20 years in the company. She has held a variety of management positions, including vice president of Internet Software in IBM’s Internet Division.

At Sun, Sueltz will be responsible for the groups working with the Solaris operating system, Java, Jini and developer tools. She will also be responsible for security products, software marketing, and the company’s developer-relations program.

The Software Products and Platforms Division was formed by Baratz in July by combining three software divisions.
