Motorola's 17th R&D center in China will focus on developing, testing software and hardware

Motorola has expanded its network of research and development (R&D) centers in China with the opening of a new facility in Hangzhou, the company said Friday.

The Hangzhou center is the 17th R&D center that Motorola has set up in China and will focus on the development of wireless technologies, the company said. The center will develop and test software and hardware for final integration into product offerings and will do work on next-generation wireless technologies, it said.

Chinese operators are looking to advanced wireless technologies, including 3G and others, to develop new sources of revenue and differentiate their services from other providers. The new center is intended to meet this demand, Motorola said.

The opening of the Hangzhou center reflects the growing importance of China as an R&D center for multinational companies. Earlier this week, Dell announced plans to expand its product development center in Shanghai.
