Cites popularity of its MySQL database in Japan as the primary reason for expansion in the country Open-source database company MySQL Wednesday opened a new subsidiary in Japan, according to the company.Executives from MySQL, based in Uppsala, Sweden, cited the popularity of its MySQL database in Japan as the primary reason for establishing the wholly owned subsidiary, MySQL KK, which is based in Tokyo. There have been more than 1 million downloads of the MySQL database by users in Japan, according to MySQL.Larry Stefonic, MySQL AB’s senior vice president of worldwide OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and embedded sales, also will serve as president of MySQL KK, according to the company. The new subsidiary will focus on offering commercial licensing, product support and professional services for its enterprise database. It also will work with Japanese partners such as NEC System Technologies, NTT Comware, Sumisho Computer Systems, NRI, Open Source Japan, SmartStyle, and Time Intermedia to deliver MySQL’s database to customers, the company said. MySQL has a U.S. subsidiary, MySQL Inc., with offices in Cupertino, Calif., and Seattle, as well as subsidiaries located in Germany and Finland. The parent company also has offices in France and plans to open a U.K. office in Dublin, Ireland, next month, a company spokeswoman said.
