Dell's new instant-on system for Optiplex desktops will give users instant access to computer data and major applications without booting up the computer

Consumers will soon get their first look at Dell’s new instant-on system for Latitude laptops, a company executive said Wednesday in Shanghai.

Users will have instant access to computer data and major applications without booting up the computer, said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president and general manager of Dell Product Group, who did not name the system.

By doing so, it allows users to work with e-mail and documents without engaging the CPU and therefore uses less energy.

Dell is promising “multi-day” battery life for new models of its Latitude laptops. The instant-on feature is called Latitude On. Clarke said only that Latitude On was “coming soon.”

Clarke previously disclosed some details of the system in August, saying it will run on a Linux OS and a separate, secondary chip, in order to extend battery life.

Correction: This story as originally posted misstated the brand of Dell PCs that will get the instant-on feature. The story also implied that there may be two names for the instant-on system, when there will only be one. The article has been amended.
