Deal pairs China's top search engine with its largest supplier of mobile phones

Baidu.com and Nokia have agreed to collaborate on mobile search capabilities for mobile-phone users in a deal that pairs China’s top search engine with the largest supplier of mobile phones in the country.

Under terms of the agreement, Nokia’s Mobile Search application, found on high-end handsets like the N60, N90 and S60, will include an icon that will link users to Baidu’s wireless search service, the companies said in a statement. Baidu’s wireless search service links users to Web, news, and image search functions in Chinese, as well as Baidu Post Bar, an online community, it said.

Financial terms of the deal, which is targeted at Chinese-speaking users in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, were not disclosed. Nokia has several search partners.

Nokia’s Mobile Search application with the link to Baidu’s wireless search service is currently available for download in mainland China from https://www.nokia.com/mobilesearch.

The deal between Baidu and Nokia follows similar partnerships announced by Google.

Earlier this year, Google announced deals with several handset makers and mobile operators to add a link to its search site on mobile phones. In January, the search company announced a deal with Motorola to add a Google icon to some handsets. Similar deals have been struck with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications  and BenQ.
