World's largest mobile phone service provider takes its first major step outside China

China Mobile Communications, the world’s largest mobile phone service provider, took its first major step outside China on Sunday, sealing a US$284 million deal to buy most of the outstanding shares of a wireless operator in Pakistan.

The Chinese company, parent company of China Mobile Ltd., agreed to buy 88.9 percent of Paktel Ltd. from Millicom International Cellular, it said in a statement. It could not be reached for further comment.

China Mobile signed the deal after months of talks. It reportedly walked away from a multibillion dollar deal to buy Millicom in the middle of last year.

Millicom said the deal will allow it to focus on the 16 other markets it operates in.

China Mobile finished last year with 301.2 million wireless subscribers, more than there are people in most countries.

Paktel is the fifth-largest mobile phone network operator in Pakistan at over 1.3 million subscribers. Pakistan boasts one of the fastest-growing mobile phone markets in the world. The number of wireless subscribers more than tripled last year to 48.2 million, up from 12.8 million a year earlier, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
