Company plans to double the number of engineers doing product development in India

Computer maker Dell plans to double the number of staff it employs in India over the next three years to about 20,000, according to the company’s chairman Michael Dell.

The Round Rock, Texas, company has 10,000 staff in India. Most of these work in call centers, though the company also employs about 300 engineers to develop and test enterprise products including servers and storage systems. The company plans to double the number of these engineers doing product development in India over the next two years.

Dell announced earlier this year that it plans to manufacture in India. It will initially build there to satisfy local demand, and then look at exports from India, Dell told reporters in Bangalore on Monday.

The company’s business in India grew by 40 percent in the company’s fourth quarter, which ended February 3, and is expected to grow by more than that in this quarter, Dell said.

The company plans to initially assemble its products in India, though down the line it may look at a more extensive manufacturing if there emerges in the country a base of manufacturers of components such as semiconductors and LCDs (liquid crystal displays), Dell said. The company is currently in discussions with a number of states in India to select the location for the facility, Dell added.
