AMD scores another victory against Intel in China, signing Hedy to launch AMD-powered PCs, laptops

Another Chinese PC manufacturer announced a pact to use Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) microprocessors, ending an Intel-only policy.

Hedy Holding Co. launched several new PCs with AMD chips inside, and plans to include laptop computers later this year, it said in a statement on Friday.

The announcement marks another victory for AMD in China. Last year, the Sunnyvale, California company convinced a number of Chinese PC makers to use its microprocessors, including Beijing Founder Electronics Co. and Tsinghua Tongfang Co., the second and third largest PC vendors in China, respectively.

Lenovo Group, the Chinese market leader, already uses AMD processors.

Lenovo held a 33.7 percent of the Chinese PC market in late 2005, according to Gartner figures compiled in November, followed by Founder with 11.6 percent and Tsinghua Tongfang in their place at 8.3 percent. Dell ranked fourth with 7.4 percent at the time, and HP fifth at 6.8 percent of the market.
