New handsets feature flat-rate data service and Slingbox satellite TV service Japanese PHS (personal handyphone system) carrier Willcom unveiled a range of new handsets in Tokyo on Monday.Among the new phones is the WX321J from Japan Radio that includes a fingerprint reader and browser for Web sites on the conventional PC-based Internet. Other handsets included the Japan Radio WX220J, which is aimed at business users, and the Kyocera WX320K, which also includes a PC browser. The phones are compatible with a data service that promises speeds of up to 204Kbps. While that’s slow by 3G standards, the Willcom phones are favored by some users because the carrier is the only one in Japan to offer an unrestricted flat-rate data service. With the data service as a backbone, Willcom has just started promoting Sling Media’s Slingbox player in Japan with satellite TV provider Sky Perfect Communications (better known as SkyPerfecTV). Offered as a set with a Windows Mobile-based smart phone, the company hopes it will be able to attract customers who want to watch their home TV while on the road. Also new on Monday was a low-cost handset from Net Index. A version of the handset is available in pink and blue as part of a tie-in with Benetton Japan. Technology Industry
