BenQ's $3M sale to Ability Enterprise is part of a broad restructuring aimed at returning the company to financial health

BenQ has agreed to sell its digital camera division as part of a broad restructuring aimed at returning to financial health after a disastrous attempt to compete in the global handset business.

The sale of the digital camera division, including most of its research and development resources, to Ability Enterprise Co. won’t bring in much money for BenQ, but it will trim its manufacturing activities. The company announced a plan to separate its manufacturing operations from its brand name division last month.

BenQ has been working to turn around its operations ever since its acquisition, then disposal, of the mobile phone arm of Siemens, which operated for about a year under the name BenQ Mobile. BenQ Mobile filed for bankruptcy last September as cutthroat competition in the mobile phone industry hurt its business. BenQ has said it lost over $1 billion in the attempt to turn BenQ Mobile profitable.

The digital camera deal with Ability Enterprise is expected to be valued at under NT$100 million (US$3 million), a BenQ representative said.

Around 70 BenQ employees will be transferred to Ability Enterprise in June, and the deal is expected to be concluded by the end of that month. BenQ will retain a few personnel from the digital camera group to focus on design and marketing.

The deal will give BenQ the ability to source digital cameras from multiple suppliers, although the company called Ability “one of our most important strategic suppliers for future BenQ branded digital cameras.”
