Indian Institute of Science to work on projects assigned by TI, including DSP, mobile and wireless

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India, for R&D (research and development) in a variety of areas including digital signal processing (DSP), analog circuits and industry-specific applications such as mobile wireless.

IISc will receive US$400,000 over five years from TI for funding research programs as well as curriculum development in the areas of DSP, analog and mixed circuits.

Besides its own research, the IISc, one of India’s leading engineering institutions, will work on specific research projects assigned by TI, N. Balakrishnan, IISc’s associate director, told reporters Monday in Bangalore. The funding for these projects would come separately, he added.

TI has tied up with IISc for research because the institute is world class in DSP and analog circuits, said Richard K. Templeton, TI’s president and chief executive officer. The alliance reflects India’s importance both as a market and as a location for technology innovation, he added.

TI has similar tie-ups with Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rice University in Houston under its Leadership Universities program. “We believe that the best R&D can be done in an university environment, because of the multi-discipline expertise available in these institutions,” Templeton said.
