Embarcadero boosts data life cycle management tools

Data life cycle management vendor Embarcadero Technologies is planning a variety of products to boost functionality of popular enterprise databases, company officials said this week.

Code Analyst, which will be an optional component of the company’s Rapid SQL database programming tool, will assist developers in analyzing response times of stored database code, such as stored procedures and triggers. Due around late June, it will support the Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, and IBM DB2 platforms. While other tools can troubleshoot SQL code, Code Analyst functions on procedural logic such as looping constructs, said Robin Shumacher, vice president of product management at Embarcadero “It will be able to time those as well, so that’s what makes it unique,” Shumacher said.

The company also is releasing tools as part of the 7.4 release of its DBArtisan database infrastructure management product, also due in the late-June timeframe. Backup Analyst will be released as a backup and recovery tool for SQL Server to decrease both backup times and storage volume requirements and encrypt sensitive files. It will be an optional component of DBArtisan. Also, the Performance Analyst component of DBArtisan will have specialized support of new performance analysis metrics available in Oracle10g, Embarcadero said.

The company also is boosting support for the open source MySQL database. Already supported in the company’s ER/Studio and DT/Studio products, MySQL will be supported in the near future in DBArtisan and Rapid SQL, Shumacher said.

Embarcadero had been told in the fall by an analyst firm that MySQL backing was not necessary. “Three months later, I reconvened with those guys and they said, ‘You’ve got to do it,’” Shumacher said.
