Sun may merge user show with its JavaOne 2005 developer conference in June Sun Microsystems Inc. has decided to postpone its September SunNetwork 2004 San Francisco user conference, and is contemplating merging the event with its JavaOne 2005 developer conference, scheduled for the end of June 2005.The motivation behind the move is belt-tightening, according to Sun.The fall conference has been postponed until the end of the second quarter of 2005 in order to “ease the burden on our partners and our marketing resources,” said May Petry, a Sun spokeswoman. By moving SunNetwork to the same time of year as JavaOne, Sun also has “the opportunity to combine events,” she said. “It has much to do with moving expense to a different point in the calendar and putting it late enough in the sales cycle that the sales force can work with it,” said a Sun employee who asked not to be identified.By moving the show, Sun will be able to “remove a significant expense hit in a low-earning quarter,” the employee said.SunNetwork 2004 San Francisco had been scheduled to occur from Sept. 13 to Sept. 15. The decision to postpone SunNetwork San Francisco will not affect Sun’s quarterly Network Computing product release, which was expected to occur at the same time as the SunNetwork San Francisco, Petry said.Sun also intends to go ahead with its European SunNetwork 2005, which is scheduled for May 4-5 in Barcelona.
