Broadcom subsidiary will offer server chip sets for 64-bit Opteron processors TAIPEI, Taiwan — Broadcom Corp.’s ServerWorks subsidiary plans to offer server chip sets for the 64-bit Opteron processor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), the companies announced Wednesday at the Computex 2004 exhibition here in Taipei.The first samples of Broadcom’s Opteron chip sets will be available during the fourth quarter. AMD and Broadcom did not disclose details of the upcoming chip set. Chip sets connect a server’s processor with the memory and I/O (input/output) functions required for storage and networking.The announcement marks a shift for Broadcom’s ServerWorks subsidiary, which until now has only made chip sets for servers based on processors from AMD’s principal rival, Intel Corp. In part, that shift reflects the success that AMD’s Opteron line has found in the enterprise server market since being introduced last year. By going into the market for Opteron chip sets, Broadcom will be facing competition from rivals including Nvidia Corp. and Via Technologies Inc.Computex runs through Saturday.
