Chip designer's partnership with CMC is intended to target highly trained engineers in India

U.S.-based programmable logic chip designer Xilinx Inc. is working with Indian software services company CMC Ltd. to develop services for the consumer electronics, communications, and automotive industries, the companies announced Wednesday.

Xilinx and CMC, a Tata Group company, plan to jointly open the Xilinx-CMC India Development Centre (XIDC) in Hyderabad, in Southern India, which is expected to employ approximately 300 people in “the next several years,” the companies said.

Xilinx, in San Jose, California, designs programmable logic chips such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) and the XIDC will be one of the first research and development facilities for Xilinx in the Asia Pacific region, it said.

Under the terms of the agreement, of which financial details were not disclosed, Xilinx will provide management support to the center while CMC will be responsible for establishing and running the XIDC.

Representatives from Xilinx and CMC could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Asia-Pacific and Japan region now accounts for 35 percent of the company’s revenue, up from 13 percent four years ago, Xilinx said. Earlier this month, the company announced its new Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore, which will employ 200 people to oversee its 10 offices in the region.

Xilinx’s partnership with CMC is intended to target highly trained engineers in India by leveraging CMC’s experience in FPGA, hardware and system designs, the companies said.
