Deal is first step in tying HP's IT products and expertise with BT's communication services

BT Group PLC (BT) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) said Monday they will trade outsourced services as a first step in a partnership tying HP’s IT products and expertise with BT’s communication services.

Executives from both companies, including HP Chief Executive Officer Carly Fiorina, were scheduled to speak at a press conference in New York to detail their plans for the alliance. The companies said they have signed managed services agreements with each other with a combined valued of $1.5 billion over the next seven years.

HP, based in Palo Alto, California, will manage BT’s midrange and desktop IT infrastructure in the U.K., while London-based BT manages HP’s voice and data network and product support call centers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The companies also plan to introduce in the next few months product and services bundles aimed at European enterprises and U.K. small and medium-sized business. Other markets will be added gradually to build the alliance into a global one, the companies said.
