Client Migration  3.0  adds fully automated, script-based migration service

Symantec is hoping to ease the desktop migration process with a tool that automates many of the more mundane, time-consuming tasks associated with moving corporate users to new systems.

Symantec Client Migration 3.0 features the company’s AutoMigrate function, a fully automated, script-based migration service. The tool also has a Web-based interface designed to make it easier for desktop users to carry out their own migration and application update tasks.

According to company officials, a major advantage of the product is that it allows users to work with a single and more familiar browser-based interface to carry out desktop migrations, including moving up to the latest version of Windows, without having to install a second client.

“Users more and more are telling us today that operating system provisioning tools by themselves often can’t sufficiently deal with the complexity of a mixed hardware and software environment. We think this tool can help them migrate PC data and desktop settings as part of their overall operating systems deployment plan,” said Thom Bailey, Symantec’s director of product management and enterprise administration.

Version 3.0 has several enhanced components, including the Migration Server, which runs on a dedicated system and is responsible for all migration resources, client log-ins, and data storage, according to a company spokesman. The server also stores migration policies and operates the self-service and AutoMigrate processes, company officials said.

Scheduled for early June and priced at $15.30 per seat based on a 10-seat license, Version 3.0 works with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Professional.
