No formal plans or details confirmed

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) is considering establishing a research and development center in South Korea, the company said Wednesday.

“We’re evaluating the possibility of an R&D center in Korea, but we haven’t made any formal plans or confirmed any details,” said Monica Sarkar, a spokeswoman for HP in the U.S.

Last year Intel Corp. said it plans to set up a research and development center focused on technologies for the digital home and wireless communications. The company had intended to have the center up and running by the end of 2003 but unspecified reasons have led to a delay in the company’s plans.

South Korea is one of Asia’s most technologically advanced nations. Multi-megabit per second broadband Internet is available almost everywhere and cellular telephone network operators have been offering commercial third-generation (3G) services since 2002.
