Director of IT operations, Trizec Properties

When you manage high-rises in seven major cities, ensuring that employees and tenants know what to do in a crisis can make a life-or-death difference. Barry Robinson, chief technologist of Chicago’s Trizec Properties, has been helping disseminate this information via portals, which provide information on safety, security, and emergency procedures. His team has also hooked each building to the corporate WAN, so Trizec’s vice president for national security can oversee security and surveillance systems in properties. This year he’s looking to expand the use of BlackBerries and other wireless communication devices so that building management can respond more quickly to tenant needs. For Robinson, it’s all about meeting business goals. “You’ve got to stay focused on the use of technology within the business,” he says. “You need to use the technology as a means to an end, not an end in itself.”
