Taiwanese company seeks to market under its own brand

TAIPEI – A subsidiary of Giga-byte Technology Co. Ltd., one of Taiwan’s top computer component makers, launched its first Gigabyte-brand mobile phone Wednesday.

The launch highlights attempts by Taiwanese companies to market more products under their own brands. Acer is one of the few well known IT brands from Taiwan, while most other IT companies on the island have worked solely in component supply and system contract manufacturing.

Gigabyte Communications Inc. will sell a slider style GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) mobile phone under the Gigabyte brand — but only in Taiwan, the company said. Pricing was not immediately available.

The company has no plans to manufacture handsets for other vendors.

“We want to try building a brand name in mobile phones first. That’s our goal,” said Grace Yeh, a spokeswoman for Gigabyte Communications.

Other Taiwanese companies have started developing their own brands in recent years. Asustek Computer Inc. launched its first own-brand mobile phones a few years ago, and Inventec Appliances Corp. started its OKWAP handset brand around the same time.
