Move is part of Nokia's managed services offering

Nokia plans to open a global networks operation center in India by the end of the year, the company said Thursday.

As part of Nokia’s managed services offering, the center will run network operation tasks for operators in the Asia Pacific region as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to the Espoo, Finland, manufacturer of mobile telecommunications equipment.

The company, however, did not disclose the location of the center, which will initially employ up to 100 people.

Nokia has three R&D (research and development) centers in India.

Earlier this year, the company said it will begin manufacturing mobile devices and base station controllers in 2006 from a facility that it is setting up in Chennai, in southern India.

A number of multinational communications service providers have established network operations centers in India, or outsourced the service to Indian companies, to take advantage of the low-cost and highly skilled manpower available in the country.

London-based operator Cable and Wireless (C&W), for example, announced in April that it is increasing the number of network services it offers from India to its customers worldwide.
