Company makes available BusinessObjects XI, Crystal Reports Server XI versions that run on Linux

Business Objects SA has released a version of its business intelligence software for Linux, it announced Tuesday, citing increased demand among customers for enterprise applications that run on the open-source operating system.

The company’s BusinessObjects XI software is available now for Red Hat Inc.’s Enterprise Linux and Novell Inc.’s Suse Linux Enterprise Server, the company announced at the Linuxworld Conference and Expo, which is taking place this week in San Francisco. Business Objects also released Linux versions of Crystal Reports Server XI, the reporting software it acquired when it bought Crystal Decisions Inc.

The company’s software was previously available only for Windows and Unix, it said. The Linux offerings will help customers reduce their ownership costs by taking advantage of lower-cost servers and operating systems, said the company, which has dual headquarters in Paris and San Jose, California.

Business Objects is not ahead of the curve with its Linux support, however. Many of its rivals, including Cognos Inc., Hyperion Solutions Corp. and Actuate Corp., already offered Linux versions of at least some of their products.
