Tools maker accommodating both camps

With Eclipse and Microsoft Windows emerging as the dominant development platforms, Compuware is staking a claim in both camps.

Compuware on Thursday announced its support for the upcoming Visual Studio 2005 platform and is elevating its participation in the Eclipse Foundation to the role of Strategic Developer.

As a gold-level sponsor of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Launch Tour kickoff event in November, Compuware will demonstrate an upcoming release of its TestPartner software, providing functional and regression testing when integrated into Visual Studio 2005 Team System.

Compuware also plans to release a new version of its code-quality tool, DevPartner Studio 8.0, and its fault simulation tool, DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5, simultaneously with Visual Studio 2005. DevPartner Studio 8.0 will integrate with Visual Studio 2005, while Fault Simulator integrates with DevPartner Studio.

Early next year, Compuware plans to release a version of its security analysis tool, DevPartner SecurityChecker, which supports Visual Studio 2005.

As a Strategic Developer in Eclipse, Compuware will now participate in developing Eclipse policies. Previously, Eclipse participated as an Add-In Provider member of Eclipse.

Compuware plans to help Eclipse serve as an integration framework for Java lifecycle tools. Currently, developers have had to either use an integrated suite of tools from a single vendor, which can feature unneeded tools in addition to the ones developers need, or assemble tools from several vendors and integrate them, said Mike Burba, marketing director for application development solutions at Compuware.

“Our vision is for customers to be able to have the best of both worlds,” Burba said.

Compuware will launch an application lifecycle management project within Eclipse to complement the existing project focused on this subject within Eclipse, which is called the Eclipse Application Lifecycle Framework. Specific details are not yet available on Compuware’s project.

Compuware previously has supported Eclipse as part of the Compuware OptimalJ 4.0  model-driven developer tool.
