Company plans to invest $538 million by 2011

LG. Philips will start building next year an LCD (liquid crystal display) module production plant in Poland, the company said Wednesday.

It is planning to invest $538 million by 2011 to establish the plant that will take LCD panels produced in South Korea and make them into completed LCD modules by adding back light units, light polarizing films, driver ICs, and product cases, it said in a statement. Once the panels have been made into completed modules they can be sold to LG.Philips customers, such as TV and monitor makers.

The focus of the module production will be TV modules, such as 26-, 32-, 37- and 42-inch panels, and 19-inch and above modules for monitors.

Locating the plant in Poland puts it close to several of the company’s major customers which have production plants in the area. Such companies include LG Electronics, Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic) and TTE Corp.

Construction of the plant is planned to start in the first half of 2006 with production beginning in the first half of 2007. At that time factory capacity will be 3 million modules per year. With additional investment LG.Philips plans to expand capacity to 11 million modules per year by 2011, it said.
