MySQL takes aim at Oracle, Microsoft with open-source database tool MySQL has released a new beta version of a tool for customers migrating from competing products to its own open-source database, it announced on Tuesday.The MySQL Migration Suite is currently for migrating from Oracle’s database and Microsoft’s Access. Future versions will support Microsoft SQL Server, IBM’s DB2 and Informix databases and Sybase’s database. MySQL said.MySQL often says its database complements, rather than competes with, databases from the major vendors, but the migration tool suggests otherwise. Availability of the new beta was announced at its user conference in Santa Clara, California, where MySQL is also highlighting an upgrade to its database aimed at corporate users. Called MySQL 5.0, the new database release is due for release by the end of the second quarter, the company has said. MySQL also announced a discount on its migration consulting services. Until June 30, customers can get five days of consulting for $8,500, during which a consultant will help plan and begin a database migration.
