Linux-StarOffice bundle will include media player Sun Microsystems Inc. will include RealNetworks Inc.’s RealPlayer media player in its forthcoming Mad Hatter Linux-based desktop package, it said Monday.The Mad Hatter bundle, now in beta testing, is a desktop software package composed mainly of open-source components. It includes Sun’s StarOffice productivity suite, the Mozilla Web browser, the Gnome (GNU Object Model Environment) desktop interface, and Ximian Inc.’s Evolution information management software.Sun is planning to formally launch Mad Hatter next week at the SunNetwork 2003 event in San Francisco. Mad Hatter is targeted at enterprise users as a way to save money on PC desktops. The operating system that is part of Mad Hatter is Sun’s own Linux distribution. RealPlayer supports a variety of file formats including MP3 and RealAudio and RealVideo. Details of the distribution agreement between Sun and RealNetworks were not disclosed.Sun also announced that it will work with RealNetworks and its Helix community on development of the Helix Player, an open source media player for Linux, Solaris and Unix.
