WorkSpace toolset makes it easier to combine older apps with those built using SOA Sybase is preparing a new software development environment that combines tools for several different types of application development into a single product, the company announced Monday.Called WorkSpace, the toolset combines enterprise modelling, data management, services assembly and orchestration, Java development, and mobile application development in one product based on the Eclipse open-source tools platform, Sybase said.The product should help reduce the complexity of combining older applications with those built using the SOA (services oriented architecture) model, and also improve productivity for developers by letting them do several tasks in a single tool, according to Sybase, in Dublin, California. The company plans to demonstrate the software at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this week and ship it in September, it said. No pricing information was given. More details should be available later Monday at http://www.sybase.com/workspace/Also Monday, Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions announced the general availability of Afaria 5.3, an update to its software for managing and securing PDAs (personal digital assistants) and other gadgets used by employees in the field.Version 5.3 works with devices based on more up-to-date software platforms, including Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5 and Symbian’s Symbian 7.0. IAnywhere added support for Microsoft’s Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS), allowing software packages created in SMS to be deployed to devices directly from the SMS console. The company also improved security and patch management features, it said.IAnywhere acquired the Afaria products when it bought XcelleNet last year. Software Development
