New high-speed wireless service that allows them to replace their fixed lines

Households in Prague can now subscribe to a new high-speed wireless service that allows them to replace their fixed lines.

The service, called Internet 4G, was launched Wednesday by the Czech subsidiary of German mobile phone operator T-Mobile International.

Internet 4G offers speeds up to 1Mbps, which are fast enough to compete with a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) connection while offering mobility in areas where service is available, T-Mobile said in a statement.

The service is based on the broadband mobile technology UMTS TD-CDMA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Time Division-Code Division Multiple Access), developed by IPWireless. The technology is based on the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) broadband standard and uses the 1900MHZ spectrum allocated for GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) services in Europe.

Service, initially available in Prague but planned for other parts of the country, will cost 699 koruna ($28) a month for a 512Kbps connection and 999 koruna for a 1Mbps link. All prices are subject to a value-added tax of 19 percent.

The service joins T-Mobile’s growing arsenal of new broadband wireless offerings.

On Monday in the Slovak Republic, T-Mobile unveiled what it called the world’s first commercial launch of another new broadband wireless technology — Flash-OFDM (fast low-latency access with seamless handoff – Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing).

Flash-OFDM is a proprietary cellular broadband technology that network operators can deploy either for notebook computers of mobile users or serve as a fixed wireless access system, bridging the “last mile” to connect computers in homes and small offices. Key features include an all-IP (all-Internet Protocol) architecture and fast speeds.

The technology, for instance, is capable of letting users download data at speeds up to 1.5Mbps or upload at speeds up to 500Kbps.

T-Mobile is also a major provide of 3G (third-generation) mobile broadband service and is currently testing wide-area WiMax technology.
