DATA INTEGRATION COMPANY Contivo on Monday rolled out a new version of its modeling product aimed at cutting implementation costs associated with data mapping and transformation across disparate applications. Contivo EIM 3.7 sports a new Enterprise Vocabulary Management feature that acts as both a dictionary and thesaurus of sorts, unifying terminology for all the far-flung data across the enterprise. Through a new set of query and reporting tools, this management capability lets users locate data and identify its meaning and the system on which it resides, according to company officials. The dictionary is populated with data “concepts” that represent a single definition for what are often many varying terms for similar data housed in disparate applications. For example, “cost code” might be the term for pricing in an SAP system, while the Siebel system’s term for pricing is “cost center.” With the Enterprise Vocabulary Management capability, IT users settle on one overarching “concept” that encompasses pricing across all applications. Other new features include a Legacy Integrator that lets users model flat-file data and convert it to XML, and vice versa. The product also sports additional Web services support for providing more context and meaning to a particular service component. Lastly, Contivo EIM 3.7 includes a new testing environment, so that data maps and transformation models can be tried out before they are handed off to the IT department that handles run time.
