Chinese customers will be able to run Oracle database on Red Flag Linux

Companies in China that are interested in Linux will be able to deploy Oracle’s database software on a version of Linux developed by Chinese company Red Flag Software under an alliance announced by the companies Wednesday.

Red Flag and Beijing Oracle Software Systems, an Oracle subsidiary, have certified the Oracle9i database software for Red Flag Linux, and are working to ensure the rest of Oracle’s product line will work on Red Flag Data Center Linux, they said in a press release.

Enterprise customers of Red Flag and Oracle will have access to technical support through a joint support lab scheduled to open in Beijing “in the near future,” the companies said in the release.

Oracle, based in Redwood City, Calif., has aggressively promoted Linux as a low-cost way to deploy its database software. It provides technical support for Oracle databases and application software on five major distributions of Linux, and is encouraging its other application development partners to create versions of their software for Linux.
