Cascading Style Sheets, integrated workflow support added

Macromedia on Monday will announce the next generation of its MX product line.

New in the family are Dreamweaver MX 2004, featuring support for the CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) standard, and Macromedia Studio MX 2004, which combines new MX tools with Freehand MX for an integrated development suite.

“We want to give people the tools they need to create beautiful Web sites,” said Macromedia’s Jeff Whatcott, senior director of product marketing.

Boeing is using Macromedia’s new tools to develop an e-learning site, said Christopher Rogers, lead programmer/analyst for training systems and support at Boeing.

The release of Studio MX 2004 combines “best-in-class development features into one single development suite,” Rogers said.

Macromedia Studio MX 2004, priced at $899, sports an integrated workflow for developing Web sites and Internet applications.

Dreamweaver MX 2004’s support of the CSS standard allows Web sites to use less bandwidth and to be easier to maintain, Macromedia said. CSS separates presentation and style from content.

Flash MX 2004 features TimeLine Effects, which allows designers to add common transitions such as blurs and drop shadows without scripting.

Flash MX Professional 2004 offers forms-based development for Flash users. Integration with video and encoding tools can enhance workflow for deploying video to the Internet.
