Hoping to lure Microsoft Exchange users to a more cost-effective messaging platform, Stalker Software this week rolled out an updated version of its CommuniGate Pro, featuring new groupware capabilities.

Version 4.1 adds a Webmail interface that includes advanced calendaring, scheduling, and contact management, according to Stalker officials in Mill Valley, Calif.

CommuniGate Pro is designed to as a replacement for Exchange back-end servers, while providing an interface to the familiar Outlook e-mail system.

Other enhancements in Version 4.1 include support for Eudora, Netscape, and Evolution standards-based mail clients and a WML interface that allows users to access information using a phone with a WAP browser.

Unlike other messaging systems, CommuniGate Pro runs on more than 30 operating system/hardware configurations, including Unix, Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and AS/400, according to company officials.
