Company unveiling tools

BMC Software on Monday plans to announce management tools for Microsoft SQL Server databases that provide for a common platform for managing mixed database environments.

The SmartDBA tools have a single look and feel across different platforms, thus eliminating the need to employ experts for each database, according to BMC.

The company is extending its SmartDBA Cockpit and DBXray to support SQL Server. SmartDBA Cockpit is a database management environment that also functions with Oracle and IBM DB2 UDB databases. DBXray is a Web-enabled diagnostics and visualization tool for administering databases, including detecting, diagnosing, and fixing problems, according to BMC.

BMC also is unveiling SQL-BackTrack for Microsoft SQL Server Version 3.0, an automated backup and recovery solution. It features usability and performance enhancements, such as being able to selectively recover individual objects from a physical backup, enabling faster and more flexible recoveries, BMC said. Additionally, multiple named instances of SQL Server can be backed up.

All three of the tools will be available immediately upon announcement Monday.
