Batteries were manufactured by a supplier whose contract had been terminated

Kyocera Wireless Corp. on Thursday launched a voluntary recall of potentially counterfeit batteries for its KE/KX 400 Series, 3200 Series and Slider Series cell phones, cautioning users that the batteries were not approved by the company for use in its phones.

The batteries were manufactured by a supplier whose contract had been terminated, the company said in a news release. Despite the termination, the supplier continued to manufacture the batteries, which were sold into the gray market.

The counterfeit batteries could be in two phones belonging to Kyocera’s 3200 series — the 3225 and 3250 phones; four phones in Kyocera’s K400 Series — the KE414/KX414 Phantom, KE424/KX424 Blade and KE434/KX434 Rave; and two phones in Kyocera’s Slider Series — the SE44 and SE47. Affected batteries can be identified by the product code or serial codes on the battery. Full product and serial code information can be found on Kyocera’s battery replacement Web site at http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/battery.html.

The Web site can also be used to request replacement batteries. Customers in the U.S. can also request a replacement battery by calling +1-866-559-3882 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.

Although a vast majority of the batteries are safe, “the best way to ensure removal of all fraudulently manufactured and counterfeit batteries from the market is to recall all batteries manufactured by this supplier — good or bad,” the company said.

Kyocera is working with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Consumer Product Safety Commission to find the counterfeit batteries and prosecute the suppliers, the company said.
