Companies to share single architecture

FRAMINGHAM – Intel and Emulex Wednesday announced at Storage Networking World in Scottsdale, Ariz., a major deal to co-develop network storage processors for Fibre Channel, as well as Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) and Serial Attached SCSI storage (SAS) technologies.

The company’s will draw on Emulex;s expertise in Fibre Channel production and Intel’s experience in SATA and SAS. The companies will use a single architecture for the development of all three technologies.

This deal will allow users to obtain Fibre Channel, SATA and SAS-enabled gear faster and at less cost.

Emulex will develop the protocol controller hardware, firmware and drives, while Intel will integrate its Xscale chip architecture and storage processor experience. Intel will also manufacture the processors using its 90-nanometer technology.

The co-developed controllers will use a technology from Emulex called the Service Level Interface, which ensures driver compatibility across products and lets controllers be upgraded independently of driver software. Using software called HBAnyware, also from Emulex, users will be able to manage and configure Fibre Channel devices, servers and workstations containing SATA or SAS drives from a single management interface.
